Although recycling is not a coherent public policy in Lima, the activity is wide spread. Thousands of low income people participate in recycling. For some people recycling is a full-time job, like the recycler in this picture, who is preparing to deliver the product of his work. For most people, however, recycling is an income generation strategy, a way of complementing their incomes. They collect mainly plastic bottles and aluminum cans and take them to informal recycling centers distributed throughout the city.
